You're Shy, But You're Gorgeous

Summer sky portrait: Low-angle shot of a man with dark curly hair in an open cream shirt with a line-drawn floral print and a silver cross necklace, set against a blue sky. Artist cover photo.

The story behind a portrait of a friend, and the moment the light said what I couldn't.

When I moved to Los Angeles at 18, I arrived with almost nothing: no connections, no roadmap. He was one of the first friends I made. He's a music artist now, and more than a decade later, he's still one of the people closest to me.

So when we planned this shoot, I wasn't just photographing a subject. I was photographing someone I know deeply, including the parts of him he doesn't always show.

Letting him stay himself

He has always been shy about showing his body. When he told me he wanted to unbutton his shirt for this shot, I knew it was a big step for him.

But I didn't want the photo to pretend that shyness wasn't there. Real confidence isn't the absence of shyness. It's choosing to show up anyway. So I let him keep his hand over his chest, a little protective and a little unsure. That gesture stays in the frame because it's honest.

The moment

I shot from below so there was nothing behind him but open blue sky: no distractions, just him and the light. Then the sun caught his eyes.

It felt like the sun was telling him what I've always known: you're shy, but you're gorgeous.

I took the shot at exactly that moment.

What I believe about portraits

A good portrait doesn't turn someone into a different person. It finds the moment when they're brave and still completely themselves, and it's ready when that moment arrives.

That's the kind of work I love most, and it's what I bring to every portrait, editorial, and campaign at Yuki Kodo Creative Studio.
